Monday, December 6, 2021

AI Sweden welcomes Magnus Sahlgren and Francisca Hoyer to the strategic initiative on Natural Language Understanding (NLU).

“AI Sweden’s strategic initiative on Natural Language Understanding is one of the keys to accelerate the use of AI for the benefit of our society, our competitiveness, and for everyone living in Sweden. We need to collaborate across the ecosystem and attract the very best to drive the development ahead. That is why I am very happy to welcome Magnus Sahlgren and Francisca Hoyer to the team!” says Daniel Gillblad, Co-Director Scientific Vision at AI Sweden.

Magnus Sahlgren will join as Head of Research, Natural Language Understanding (NLU). He has a background at RISE, where he was the Head of the Natural Language Processing Group for 5 years. His research has focused on computational models for language understanding, at the intersection between computational linguistics, machine learning, and AI.

“Our new initiative on NLU will focus specifically on very large-scale language models for the Swedish language. Such models require intensive amounts of data and compute, and are thus greatly facilitated by collaborative efforts. Our goal is to promote and facilitate such efforts in Sweden and in the Nordic region, and to thereby accelerate the use and applicability of such models broadly in both the private and public sectors,” says Magnus Sahlgren.

Francisca Hoyer also joins as Strategic Program Manager for AI Sweden’s strategic initiative Natural Language Understanding. Francisca has a PhD in history and joins the NLU team with new questions and perspectives. At AI Sweden, Francisca develops applied language technology research- and innovation projects in close collaboration with actors from the public and private sector as well as academia.

“After having studied how people in the past shaped global transformation processes, I am now excited to contribute to meaningful change and innovation myself at AI Sweden and in close collaboration with the public and private sectors and academia,” says Francisca Hoyer.
