Strengthening the infrastructure and expanding opportunities at AI Sweden’s Data Factory

Monday, October 23, 2023

Since its establishment, the equipment that’s an important part of AI Sweden’s Data Factory has been located in Gothenburg. The team is now planning to place hardware at other nodes as well.

“This is a way to meet the increasing interest we see in the partner network,” says Helena Theander, head of operations at the Data Factory.

As we navigate the constantly evolving landscape of AI innovation, it is crucial to pause, reflect, and acknowledge the progress we have made together so far, and the exciting new plans we have on the horizon. Over the past years, collaboration within the partner network has been key to the Data Factory’s growth.

“We've been fortunate to deepen our relationship with our partners, working hand in hand to expand our infrastructure and strengthen our lead and foothold in decentralized learning,” says Mats Nordlund, head of the Data Factory.

Today, the infrastructure stands valued at an impressive 70 MSEK, a testament to the generous contributions from our partners and notable grants from organizations like Vinnova, and Västra Götalandsregionen, among others.

Our Edge Learning Lab has witnessed increased partner activity, and to further our collective understanding, we have released two informational videos this year on decentralized learning and the capabilities of the Edge Learning Lab. We encourage all partners to watch and share them,” says Helena Theander.

The Road Ahead

“Our next mission is to expand our lab's presence across more nodes within AI Sweden, enhancing our reach and accessibility,” says Mats Nordlund.

Part of this work is also an adjusted financing model to ensure stable operations of the Data Factory’s infrastructure and support. During the establishment phase, partner contributions have been matched with funding from Vinnova. However, complementary funding is needed for the maintenance of infrastructure.

“We will now need to adjust our model, where the partners using the facilities for their projects will share some of the costs,” says Helena Theander.
