The AI map for municipalities
Provides a clear overview of AI initiatives in Sweden's 290 municipalities
Through an interactive map, Kommunkartan, users can explore the areas in which municipalities are running AI initiatives and the societal benefits these initiatives can create. The mapping aims to spread knowledge about ongoing AI efforts in Sweden and highlight where they are taking place, to foster connections and collaborations that strengthen AI development in Sweden’s municipalities.
Dive into the mapping and learn more about Swedish municipalities' AI efforts
The results from the national survey of AI-related projects in Swedish municipalities are compiled in the report: Svenska kommuners AI-relaterade initiativ (in Swedish).
The report was produced by AI Sweden in collaboration with Dcipher Analytics.
Why map AI initiatives across Sweden's municipalities?
The purpose of the mapping is to spread knowledge about what is happening across Sweden. By mapping and making visible for the first time the initiatives being undertaken, contacts and collaborations that strengthen AI development in Sweden's municipalities can be promoted.
It is crucial to clarify where AI can create proven value in various municipal activities and to understand what drives AI development in a municipal context for applied AI development to proceed effectively in the public sector. The municipal map (Kommunkartan) is a response to this need. More practical examples are needed to find applications that can be shared between municipalities and sectors.
What data is the mapping based on?
The underlying data has been collected from nationwide news sources over the past two years, directly from the municipalities' websites via an AI-based research agent, annual reports, AI Sweden's case database MyAI, and through direct correspondence with the municipalities.
The information was analyzed using AI-based content analysis to classify the initiatives by target group, technology, and application area. The mapping should be considered a snapshot of ongoing AI-related activities in Sweden's municipalities
The analysis is partially automated and also relies on data provided by the municipalities themselves to obtain the most accurate picture possible. However, this method means that errors in the data may occur. In cases where data could not be found, it should not be interpreted as there being no AI initiatives, but rather that the data could not be located.
The mapping was carried out by Dcipher Analytics on behalf of AI Sweden.

About Collaboration for AI in municipalities and civil society
Kommunkartan is part of the “Collaboration for AI in municipalities and civil society” initiative, a four-year collaboration between AI Sweden, Vinnova, DIGG (the Swedish Agency for Digital Government), MUCF (the Swedish Agency for Youth and Civil Society), and SKR (the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions).
The initiative provides tailored support to municipalities and civil society on effectively utilizing AI. Participants gain access to education, workshops, and AI Sweden’s network. Funded projects in targeted calls by Vinnova also receive additional support throughout the project period.
