The Swedish Center for Trusted and Resilient AI (STRAIC)
Artificial intelligence is already embedded in critical infrastructure like healthcare, energy, defense, and public services. But as AI becomes more pervasive, so do the risks: vulnerabilities in AI systems can lead to large-scale disruptions, from manipulated supply chains to threats to national security.
Sweden has a unique opportunity to lead the development of AI that is both intelligent and trustworthy – systems that are resilient to attacks, transparent in decision-making, and aligned with democratic values. STRAIC (Swedish Center for Trusted and Resilient AI) is a pre-study for the national initiative that can make this a reality.
By bringing together top expertise across academia, industry, the public sector, and defense, STRAIC aims to establish and coordinate permanent national capabilities to:
- Develop AI systems that are secure and robust by design.
- Rapidly detect and respond to threats against deployed AI systems.
- Train the next generation of AI security experts, with cross-sector mobility between academia, industry, and government.
- Strengthen Sweden’s competitiveness by making trusted AI a key export advantage for Swedish companies.
Purpose
STRAIC will achieve educational, scientific, economic, and societal impact by training world-class talent and advancing cutting-edge research and innovation in AI security. It does so by fusing Sweden’s strengths across academia, industry, public institutions, and the defence sector into a unified national system with shared responsibility and purpose.
At its core, STRAIC exists to ensure that AI becomes a source of long-term strength for Sweden economically, societally, and strategically.
