Electrical grid capacity map for municipal planning
This pre-study explores how a map of electricity grid capacity can be designed to support municipal planning. It will result in a requirements specification for such a tool, aiming to streamline planning processes and improve collaboration between municipalities and electricity grid companies.

Municipalities often lack information on available electricity grid capacity when making decisions about land use and development. This can lead to delays and complications, as projects may be planned without considering the crucial factor of electricity availability.
This pre-study aims to address this issue by investigating municipalities need for a grid capacity map. The project will explore the necessary design elements, such as geographical resolution and data update frequency, to ensure the map's practical utility in urban planning.
The project is conducted in collaboration with Region Östergötland.
Challenges
The absence of readily available and detailed information on electricity network capacity poses a significant challenge to effective municipal planning. This lack of information can result in planning delays, increased project lead times, and the risk of wasted resources on projects that cannot be realized due to insufficient electricity capacity.
Furthermore, there are challenges related to knowledge gaps, communication and collaboration issues between municipal planning functions and electricity grid companies, and the reluctance of electricity grid companies to share grid capacity information.
Project purpose
The purpose of this pre-study is to define the requirements for a grid capacity map that can be used by municipalities in their physical planning processes. The project will investigate the specific needs of municipalities regarding the content, format, and functionality of such a map.
Expected outcomes
The main outcome of the pre-study will be a needs assessment detailing the requirements for a grid capacity map from the perspective of municipalities. This will include specifications for data granularity, update frequency, and other relevant factors. The results will be presented in a final report and a mockup of the map.
