GPT Summer Internship Program

This transformative program was created to accelerate the implementation of generative AI in Sweden. It is a way for AI Sweden partners to work with high-performance student teams in a ten-week-long summer program. The aim is to investigate the use of GPT models to improve competitiveness and performance in their organizations.

GPT Summer Internship Program

Chalmers, Västra Götalandsregionen, and Zenseact joined the program during the first cohort in the summer of 2023, forming a dynamic collaboration with AI Sweden. Together, their shared commitment to speed, boldness, and collaboration resulted in the creation of a successful and innovative program.

“The GPT summer internship program was truly a success story for us as participating partners. We truly appreciate AI Sweden’s fast way of working and creating value for their partners through bold initiatives like this one! Developing GPT-based software during this program was an incredible learning experience and a good way for us to gain further momentum in the area of generative AI. The students that we got to collaborate with in the program were so talented, we decided to give them part-time contracts.” says Lucas Ambjörn, Zenseact

In the 2023 GPT Summer Internship Program, eight students from Chalmers University of Technology explored possibilities and limitations with generative AI at the abovementioned partners. Behind the scenes, the success of generative AI projects depends heavily on robust infrastructure and high-performance computing. Student teams received support from and access to Microsoft’s infrastructure during their projects.

Partner offering

Partners will benefit by having one or more student teams work on challenges and questions related to e.g., how GPT models can be used to benefit the sponsoring partner. It is also an opportunity to build a talent pipeline, share knowledge, strengthen the AI ecosystem, and enhance the partner's reputation as an innovator and fast learner. At the end of the program, all student teams will share their results and findings with all participating partners to help disseminate knowledge, innovations, and learnings.

What is expected from participating partners

  • One or more questions/challenges for the students to explore.

  • Access to necessary data.Mentoring students (to ensure they get the questions right).

  • Participation in meetings with the students at the start of the program and at least three additional times.

  • Participation in the closing event where results are presented.

  • Provide funding for the team.

About the program

Teams of three sponsored graduate students (currently pursuing a Masters or Ph.D. degree) will work on industry-relevant questions related to GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) models, as proposed by AI Sweden partners from both the public and private sectors. The program spans over ten weeks during the summer.

AI Sweden will provide collaborative working spaces in Stockholm and Gothenburg for the internship students, fostering an environment of shared learning and innovation.

Students will receive mentorship from experienced professionals at leading Big Tech companies, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of GPT models and their practical applications.

The internship will culminate in a grand final event, where students will present their findings and achievements to all partners involved. This event will serve as a platform to share learnings, discuss challenges, and explore future collaborations between the academic and industrial realms. Watch the 2023 cohort event here:

Who can apply

The program is open for graduate students currently pursuing a Master's or Ph.D. degree in a field relevant to the scope of the program. Teams are to be formed before the application is submitted and we believe that they should consist of the following competencies:

  • Machine Learning/Deep Learning Engineer

  • Data Scientist/Data Analyst

  • Software Developer

Teams will be selected based on team composition, grades, experience, and motivation to participate in the program. Participants will receive hourly compensation during the program and are expected to work full-time (40 hours per week) for ten weeks.
