DataRätt InnoVation (DRIV) 2021-2023

The DataRights Innovation (DRIV) project aimed to create conditions for efficiently and accurately handling legal issues arising in research and innovation projects (R&I) within data-driven innovation. The project was funded through Vinnova's call for data labs and data workshops.

DataRätt InnoVation (DRIV) projekt

DRIV targeted project managers, lawyers, IT/Tech experts, data protection officers, and all others involved in publicly funded R&I projects within data-driven innovation. It focused primarily on projects in the fields of Mobility, Healthcare, and Urban Development. DRIV delimited its scope to legal considerations within the EU.

The main purpose and goals of the project were to:

  1. Identify the legal challenges faced by such R&I projects. What methods are necessary to address these issues? What support measures are needed? What systematic changes are required?
  2. Develop methods and tools to conduct legal risk analysis based on project data assets, identifying and planning how to address the issues that need to be investigated. The method was evaluated in a number of pilot projects within data-driven innovation.
  3. Strengthen the general legal understanding among the target audience through DRIV's Seminar Series, in order for each project to identify and plan for its own activities and the need for additional expert advice.
  4. Inspire an approach where legal and technical experts together address legal issues early and throughout the project. By collaborating and increasing understanding of each other's areas of expertise, different disciplines, and professional groups can learn from each other.
  5. Monitor developments and follow the work of new legislation such as the AI Act, Data Act, etc., which may directly impact these projects.

Results:

The DRIV project brought together various stakeholders who identified legal challenges in data-driven innovation research and innovation projects. Through roundtable discussions and seminars, desirable support measures were identified, and the participant's level of knowledge increased.

A method for identifying and managing risks in collaborative projects was developed and evaluated in three research and innovation projects. If you want to know more about this model, contact johan.felix@chalmersindustriteknik.se.

A legal environmental analysis identified regulatory sandboxes as a concept to further evaluate.
