AI Sweden is expanding its language technology team by recruiting Birger Moëll into the role of Senior Research Scientist. He will work to help strengthen Sweden's and Europe's position in large-scale language models through the OpenEuroLLM project.
Birger Moëll
OpenEuroLLM is one of Europe's most ambitious AI initiatives, aiming to develop the next generation of open and transparent large language models to advance European AI capabilities. In addition to AI Sweden, the project includes more than 20 organizations, research institutions, and companies from various countries.

Birger’s extensive experience in software development and machine learning will be a highly significant contribution to the NLU team, and to the OpenEuroLLM project in particular. His technical depth and understanding of how to train and evaluate large language models are exactly what is needed for us to drive the development of European language models forward.

Birger Moëll will step into the role of Senior Research Scientist at AI Sweden's language technologies unit while continuing his work as a Senior Lecturer in Computational Linguistics at Uppsala University. Birger's focus will be on the European collaborative project OpenEuroLLM, where his work will include developing techniques to provide language models with a longer context window - a critical component for enabling the models to handle and understand larger amounts of information.
"I am very excited to join AI Sweden. The organization plays a vital role in disseminating knowledge, driving application, and strengthening Sweden's and Europe's AI ecosystem," says Birger Moëll, Senior Research Scientist, NLU at AI Sweden.
OpenEuroLLM is an important project for several reasons, he notes.
"Obviously, there is inherent value in open, transparent models. But another key contribution of OpenEuroLLM is that the project also raises collective knowledge and capability in Europe. In the long run, this is absolutely central to our digital sovereignty and to our ability to continue creating value with AI."
Combining Psychology, Research, and Deep Technical Experience
Birger Moëll has a unique and multifaceted background. He was originally trained as a psychologist, with extensive experience in software development, programming, and machine learning.
He defended his doctoral thesis at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in December 2025 with his dissertation, Evaluation of AI in the Medical Domain, and is passionate about using AI to improve human well-being and teaching how AI actually works.

For me, the connection between psychology and AI is about understanding how systems process information. In the paradigm shift we are currently experiencing, it is crucial that we dare to go deep, open the 'technical boxes,' and build a genuine technical understanding. That is how we create systems that actually work and deliver real-world benefits.
