Region Västra Götaland makes a new, long-term investment in AI Sweden

Tuesday, April 21, 2026

Region Västra Götaland continues its commitment to artificial intelligence, investing SEK 21 million in AI Sweden over three years—to strengthen the region's competitiveness and increase AI usage.

"By funding AI Sweden's regional hub in Gothenburg, we are strengthening West Sweden's capacity to transform AI from potential to actual benefit. This is not just about technology; it's about leadership, competence, and the ability to restructure entire operations. This investment contributes to increased AI adoption, strengthens public welfare, and makes our region more competitive," says Madeleine Jonsson (MP), Chair of the Environment and Regional Development Committee.

"At the same time, we are positioning Västra Götaland as a leading AI region in Europe—an attractive place for establishments, investments, and collaborations within a growing ecosystem,” she continues.

Region Västra Götaland has been one of the funders enabling AI Sweden's operations since its start in 2019. The region has invested both in specific projects, including AI applications in healthcare, and in AI Sweden's core funding. The current investment is an example of the latter and extends until March 2029.

Rebecka Lönnroth, Head of AI Adoption Public Sector at AI Sweden, is pleased with the Västra Götaland Region's continued commitment:

The needs the region is expressing are what we see among many of our partners. There is no longer any doubt that AI can contribute to significant operational benefits. But realizing those opportunities requires new capabilities and skills, particularly concerning leadership and governance. It is fantastic that the Västra Götaland Region is making such a large and long-term commitment to these areas.

The funds will be used to work with the region, its municipalities, companies, and other organizations on matters including raising knowledge levels and leadership issues, thereby creating the prerequisites for the systematic implementation and scaling of artificial intelligence.

"The transformation the Västra Götaland Region wants to undertake is not unique to them. Other regions, municipalities, and government agencies have the same needs. At the same time, Västra Götaland has several leading industrial companies that have made great progress in AI and possess a wealth of knowledge. What we will do together with the VGR will be an important contribution to building joint national knowledge and capability," says Rebecka Lönnroth.
