Opinion: Sweden must strengthen sovereignty and strategic alliances in the AI era

Friday, May 15, 2026

Sweden must leverage international collaboration and maximize the use of leading technologies while simultaneously building sufficient national capacity in critical areas. This is the only way to achieve true strategic and operational freedom of action. This is the message from AI Sweden today in an op-ed for Dagens Industri (Di Debatt).

Sweden is currently in the midst of a paradigm shift where civil prosperity, technological advancement, and national security are intertwined, creating new dependencies and power dynamics.

To reduce vulnerability and reliance on foreign entities while strengthening national autonomy, Sweden must develop the strategic and operational capabilities necessary to navigate the technological developments on which it is becoming increasingly dependent.

Sweden, Europe, and the world are entering a transformative period that will redistribute competitiveness and room for maneuver. We are convinced that these strategic choices are vital for Sweden to remain strong and to project our democratic values and transparency throughout this revolution. Our political parties and those aspiring to lead the country after the next election must now give this development the attention and weight it demands.
