New project will accelerate the Swedish mobility ecosystem with AI

Tuesday, March 16, 2021

Artificial intelligence (AI) holds great potential for a more resource efficient and sustainable society in the future. The mobility industry, like all other industries, will be strongly affected. AI will, for example, be used to predict transport needs and for the maintenance of physical and digital infrastructure and for services in the future mobility system. Therefore, a new initiative on AI Driven Mobility has been launched, engaging important actors within the Swedish mobility ecosystem and AI experts.

These are some examples, but the impact of AI will be much greater than that. It will drive competitiveness for the private sector and create solutions for the future for the public sector.

"The most innovative breakthroughs occur when people from different areas and organisations collaborate to solve common problems. It unlocks shared values that are greater than if each of us would have worked separately. Mobility is crucial for all of Swedish society, so it becomes natural for all partners in this project to collaborate", says Marie Karlsson, Drive Sweden.

The new initiative "AI Driven Mobility” will bring about strategic collaborations between the mobility industry, AI experts and public sector. Behind the project stand Drive Sweden and AI Sweden, who are joined by about twenty partners from industry, society and academia – and CLOSER, bringing in competence from the logistic sector.

"Far more than everything else, AI is all about using our resources better, more efficiently, and creating more sustainable ways of reaching goals. Saving lives. Decreasing emissions. AI plays an enormous part if we are to reach the UN Sustainable Development Goals", says Kye Andersson, AI Sweden.

"We want to change perspectives and prepare for new business models, new interfaces and new collaborations. Technology will be at the centre of the study, however, when working with transformation a focus on humans is paramount", says Anna Kristiansson, CLOSER.

The initiative will also investigate how AI becomes ethically correct and how we can ensure that relevant policies and regulations are followed. This comprehensive take will help accelerate the Swedish mobility ecosystem.

The initiative is a strategic step in many partners’  organizational development andwill serve as  a platform for retrieving knowledge, inspiration and networking with other industries and AI experts.

The AI knowledge of different actors and stakeholders varies greatly. Thus, it’s crucial to increase the general knowledge and AI readiness in the whole system. Another important aspect to examine regards data; What kind of data exists? Where in the mobility sector is it located? What kind of data needs to be created and in what form?

AI Driven Mobility is a strategic project within Drive Sweden, one of the Government’s 17 Strategic Innovation Programmes with funding from Vinnova, Formas and Energimyndigheten.

In this project/initiative, three of the programs at Lindholmen Science Park are collaborating, bringing innovative power and competence from leading Swedish networks. The three programs are AI SwedenDrive Sweden and CLOSER, combining deep knowledge from AI, future mobility and logistics.
