How can we boost AI-driven innovation in Swedish business? This question was discussed when AI Sweden gathered leading companies and Social Democratic Members of Parliament (MPs) for an exclusive roundtable talk about which initiatives, measures, and investments could have the greatest impact on Swedish innovation capacity.
Initiated by AI Sweden, representatives from companies including Legora, Tandem Health, Volvo Group, and Stena Line met with Social Democratic MPs to discuss what is required to strengthen AI-driven innovation within the business sector. Sweden's ability to translate AI into tangible innovation and benefits is crucial for both welfare and growth. Many companies are driving development forward, but they face structural obstacles that risk slowing down the pace. The purpose of the discussion was to capture real-world experiences and clarify what political action can be taken to facilitate the large-scale implementation of AI.

Skills shortages and data access high on the agenda
During the conversation, the skills supply was identified as one of the most critical bottlenecks. Participants agreed on the need for a cohesive national approach to attract and retain international top-tier expertise – a prerequisite for conducting advanced AI development.
Access to data and interoperability were also highlighted as crucial factors, particularly in the healthcare sector, where data sharing has the potential to create enormous value for patients and research, but where technical and legal barriers often stand in the way.
Regulation as an enabler
The discussion also touched upon the importance of clear rules of the game. The message from the business community was that lack of clarity and varying interpretations, rather than the regulation itself, often hinders innovation. A more uniform, technically grounded application of rules and a proactive stance toward EU processes were requested to give companies the predictability needed to dare to invest.
Time to raise the level of ambition
The conclusion from the dialogue was clear: Sweden has strong fundamental conditions, including high digital maturity, an innovative business sector, and an excellent climate for collaboration. What we must do now is raise the level of ambition with larger and more focused national initiatives concentrating on application and commercialisation. There is a strong willingness to accelerate, but a shared direction and bolder investments are required.
The level of ambition was a recurring central theme, and it is gratifying that there is such a clear desire from both sides for Sweden to aim higher to ensure that AI strengthens the innovation and competitiveness of Swedish business.
