Beyond today’s technology: Minister of Defense visits AI Sweden

Tuesday, August 25, 2026

Sweden’s Minister of Defense, Pål Jonson, visited AI Sweden for a strategic discussion about a question that reaches beyond today’s technologies: How can Sweden anticipate what is coming next and turn that insight into operational advantage in military defense faster than an adversary can adapt?

During the visit, AI Sweden experts presented insights on crucial developments, addressing not just current trends but risks and opportunities that have yet to enter the public spotlight.

”To counter sudden, emerging threats, we cannot simply rely on existing solutions. We need a national innovation system capable of instantly shifting into a high-speed mode,” says Tommy Schönberg, Head of Defense Innovation at AI Sweden.

”If everybody is looking at what the spotlight illuminates today, we are already too late,” says Mats Nordlund, Director of Research & Innovation at AI Sweden. He continues:

”Strategic advantage comes from understanding what is emerging outside the spotlight and building the ability to act before it becomes obvious.”

AI Sweden experts highlighted emerging developments that may reshape the security landscape before they become obvious. This includes AI-accelerated cyber operations, new vulnerabilities created by widespread AI adoption, and increasingly autonomous systems that challenge traditional assumptions about oversight, testing, and control.

AI Sweden has worked with AI security for several years and is now helping form a national AI security cluster, bringing together key actors from academia as well as public and private sector to build and sustain this capability at a world-leading level.

The visit concluded with a demonstration in AI Sweden’s test infrastructure, illustrating how theoretical models and strategic frameworks translate into real-world applications.
