Since 2021, AI Sweden has had a process for measuring the AI maturity of its partner organizations. It has now been updated to better reflect the developments that have taken place in the AI field since then.
"The method was originally developed by the German organization AppliedAI. AI Sweden has played a major role in the work on the updated version, where we have, among other things, contributed to a clearer adoption perspective and given responsible AI more prominence," says Per Clingweld, Change Agent and responsible for maturity assessments at AI Sweden.

The purpose of the maturity assessment is to give organizations an understanding of how far they have come in their governance and use of artificial intelligence. Based on a questionnaire, management receives a report with proposals for activities, measures, and decisions that can drive development forward.

A central part is the workshop where employees representing different skills and departments jointly reflect on the survey results. During the workshop, many pieces often fall into place.

Mälarenergi was the first to conduct a maturity assessment using the new process.
"At Mälarenergi, our mission is to enable a resource-efficient society, and we are convinced that AI will help drive us toward that," says Anni Rosenberg, AI Lead at Mälarenergi.
To create the right conditions for utilizing AI in their long-term work, she sees the maturity assessment as an important tool.

The maturity assessment provides a systematic way to keep track of our progress. But it is not just a measurement conducted on a single occasion. The results will serve as a steering tool moving forward, with specific tasks to tackle before the next assessment. For us, the most important insight was that we need to set an AI ambition for the entire company.

Östgötatrafiken, Region Östergötland's public transport company, conducted the maturity assessment for the third time in the spring of 2026. Carin Carelind is the Head of IT and explains why:
"We realized after the first assessment in 2022 that it acts as a good nudge for the whole organization. When you show the results to management, the departments, and the employees, everyone understands where they are and how they need to move forward," she says.
She also confirms the description of the value creation that takes place in the workshop part:

We have acted as a reference for other partners considering a maturity assessment. When they've said that they already know they aren't very AI-mature at all and therefore don't see an obvious benefit in doing the assessment, we have emphasized the workshop component. During the workshops, new connections are created across the organization that contribute to something new. People talk about AI and the use of the technology from different perspectives, and this leads to new ideas emerging, both about how the technology can be used and how to take steps in that direction.
