The AI era places significantly greater demands on leadership than previous technological shifts. We are now witnessing the emergence of a new leadership paradigm - not because the technology itself is more complex, but because its consequences are more far-reaching, faster-moving, and harder to contain.
"There is a growing imbalance in Swedish business where AI and its opportunities are developing faster than current leadership styles and organizational structures. We must do something about that," says Annika Elfström, Acting Managing Director at AI Sweden.

AI Sweden Leadership Report 2026: A Vision for Leadership Reshaping Business, as the report is titled, examines how successful leaders create value, make decisions, and adapt in an environment characterized by AI. The report is based on AI Sweden's collective experience and interviews with decision-makers at companies actively transforming their organizations using data and AI—companies like AstraZeneca, Saab, and Södra.

What distinguishes leading companies is not superior technology, but a different leadership mindset: a courage to act in uncertainty, to invest early, and to view AI as a strategic issue rather than a technical one.

The most successful companies view technology as a growth engine for investments in core operations. They use AI to expand, creating new revenue streams, new capabilities, or new products. To succeed, a new kind of investment logic is required, along with strong integrity to make decisions even when the return on investment (ROI) is uncertain.
"This runs counter to much of the application we see in many companies today, where AI is primarily used to automate existing processes," says Göran Lindsjö.
Another key success factor is the ability to make rapid decisions. Successful leaders create decision flows that allow for both local autonomy and speed, as well as alignment, accountability, and risk discipline at the corporate level. The goal is not more decisions, but decisions translated into action quickly, correctly, and without ambiguity.

We want to create an understanding of what characterizes successful leadership in an AI-driven world. The challenge is not simply implementing AI, but reshaping the business through AI. It’s not 'business as usual' with better tools, this is a new leadership paradigm.
