The government’s clear ambition to be among the top ten countries in the world for AI, and for Sweden to be the world leader in using AI within public administration, is very positive. However, the measures announced so far will not be enough to get us there. To realize these goals, we need significant investment, new ways of organizing, and courageous decisions.

As a concrete measure to ensure the strategy does not remain merely on paper, AI Sweden is calling for a central function within the Government Offices—inspired by countries such as Estonia.
"AI is a technology that cuts across all sectors of society and is developing at breakneck speed. What will be the societal consequences of agentic AI systems, shifting international alliances, and new breakthroughs every month? These are questions that must be continuously monitored, understood, and acted upon. Therefore, there is a need for a permanent central capability within the Government Offices with a mandate to follow developments, create policy, and drive implementation from a horizontal perspective," Mikael Ljungblom concludes.
