AI - a key component of future defense capabilities: AI Sweden participates in state visit to Poland

Tuesday, March 17, 2026

The impact of AI on preparedness and defense capabilities was a key topic during a business delegation in which AI Sweden participated. Held in conjunction with the Swedish King and Queen's state visit to Poland from March 10–12, the delegation included Mikael Ljungblom, Director of Public Policy and International Relations, and Mats Nordlund, Director of AI Labs at AI Sweden.

AI will not only be part of - and enhance -our systems; the technology will increasingly determine how quickly we can develop and improve them.

The business delegation was organized by Business Sweden. The purpose of the trip was to deepen business relations and strengthen resilience and competitiveness in Europe. One of the delegation's priority areas was the transformative power of AI within defense innovation and security cooperation in the Baltic Sea region. In Gdańsk, the Baltic Sea Security Talks were held, where Mikael Ljungblom highlighted AI’s ability to accelerate innovation in the field of defense.

"AI will obviously improve many specific defense systems, such as situational awareness, planning, and cyber defense, but the real impact is much broader than that. AI will increasingly determine how quickly we can improve our systems and capabilities," said Ljungblom.

For many years, AI Sweden has created environments where government agencies, researchers, and industry can meet to discuss, collaborate, and test methods and tools for faster defense innovation. Connecting this work more closely with Poland and other partners in the neighboring region is a natural next step.

By collaborating with partners, such as those in Poland, we could develop shared experimental environments and AI-driven innovation ecosystems for the Baltic Sea region. In the relatively near future, the decisive factor will not only be who has the best technology, but who can improve their capabilities the fastest: us or our adversaries.
